The production and trade of metals was the foundation economic wealth many regions in world, which makes study ancient metallurgical slags primary importance. This type is relatively new for Bulgaria, where research field started late 1960s with chemical analysis copper ore, slags, tools finished goods from mine Ay-bunar area. Iron one most commonly found elements earth’s crust its deposits are widespread, including on Bulgaria’s territory. To this day, however, iron Bulgarian sites through phase has almost never been explored. application these methods allows determination technology process. investigates two archaeological sites, situated close proximity to Sarnevets hematite ore deposit, Sarnena Sredna Gora mountain. bodies deposit outcrop surface can be easily recognized due red coloring soil around them, a characteristic trait finding deposits. In addition mining activities region, proven by over 20 registered workings, were established as well, discovered slags. A sample studied along so that percentage extracted during process determined. samples X-ray fluorescence analysis, powder diffraction Mössbauer spectroscopy. obtained results show “furnace bottom slags” type, product activity achieved bloomery technology. temperature range furnaces determined 900–1100 °C. reduction possible at such low temperatures ore’s type—self-fluxing ore. calculated between 3.39% 8.65%. Additionally, relationship iron, Fe2+ content included wüstite, viscosity index liquid slag. acquired studies conducted territory prerequisite future interpretation research.
